Jewelry Care Instructions

At Mariposa Made, each piece of jewelry is lovingly handcrafted in Tanisha’s studio, using a variety of materials including brass, sterling silver, gold vermeil, and 10/14k gold. To keep your jewelry looking beautiful for years to come, proper care is essential.

General Care Tips:

To minimize wear and tear, avoid wearing your jewelry during activities where it might get damaged or scratched—such as biking or working out. Additionally, please refrain from applying perfume, moisturizers, or oils before putting on your jewelry, as these can wear down the materials. Always remove your pieces before sleeping, showering, or swimming (this includes gold items) to ensure their longevity.

Gold Care: 

Avoid Chemicals: Keep your gold jewelry away from harsh chemicals, such as cleaning products, perfumes, and lotions, as they can cause discoloration.

Store Properly: Store gold items separately in soft pouches or cloth-lined jewelry boxes to prevent scratching.

Clean Regularly: Gently clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or brush. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely with a soft, lint-free cloth.

For added shine, occasionally polish your gold jewelry with a jewelry polishing cloth or take it to a professional for cleaning. One will be provided with your order.

Remove Before Activities: Take off your gold jewelry before swimming, exercising, or doing housework to avoid damage or exposure to abrasive materials.

Sterling Silver Care:

Sterling silver jewelry may naturally oxidize over time due to wear. This is not indicative of a defect, but rather a characteristic of the material. A simple cleaning with a polishing cloth will restore its shine. To clean sterling silver, gently wash it with warm water and baking soda, then polish with the soft silver cloth provided with your purchase.

Gold Vermeil and Gold Plated Care:

  • Gold Vermeil: Composed of 925 sterling silver with a gold coating.
    Gold Plated: Features a brass core with gold plating.

    For gold plated items, please avoid contact with chemical substances such as hairspray, cosmetics, perfumes, and chlorine. To maintain your pieces in good condition, store them in a dry place, preferably in their original Mariposa Made packaging.

  • Please do not polish gold vermeil or plated items with cloths, as this can wear away the surface. Keep in mind that plated items may fade over time with regular wear. We offer an affordable professional re-plating service—please contact us at customerservice@mariposamade.com for more details.

Brass Care:

Like silver, brass will oxidize with wear. It’s important to note that brass can sometimes cause skin discoloration; this is a natural reaction to skin acids, and is temporary. To clean brass jewelry, use a soft silver cloth, which will also be included with your order.
